Games unearth the dirt
The cryptic title will become clear towards the end…
This morning we had some shocking news. We went to Moyri and Uznur to get it. They had a guest: a visiting tapestry merchant named Dimani ar-Rajul. She was sent by Koll Konandé, on the very same night that we made our alliance with him, to make sure that Athal would not free Solay. A letter from Raith later confirmed this. The merchant/spy was going to write us a list of spies that she knew about. But as we were talking to her she told us that she had had three miscarriages and Moyri got suspicious. Roushan confirmed that she had been given a slow-working poison that would have killed her in another six months. She called Dushtan to help and together they did what they could to expel the poison. They seem to have succeeded, but now she has to sleep for a day or two so we do not yet have the list. Raith did give us a name or two.
We talked the situation over with Uznur and later with Lyse of the Order and Father. Lyse will send two runners who are a couple to Beguyan, Zahmati and Roushan, and Rhanion; Father will also send someone who isn’t gifted that way. Iss-Peranians do this scheming on a level that’s foreign to us. We need to take that into account. That’s one of the reasons we need a Iss-Peranian spy-master we can trust. Luckily Uznur seems to enjoy that sort of thing. There are few Iss-Peranians I trust as much as him. He will have to keep an eye on Koll Konandé’s spies.
Just after we returned the first of the formerly Eraday pages arrived. His name was Rovin and he had a black eye. The ringleader, Fian, a cursed name it seems, had hit him for suggesting taking our offer. In hindsight we should have separated them, but I’m glad he stood up for himself: it shows promise, he will make a fine Nusan. Three others anounced themselves, Halla, Faran and Serla. They would join Reshan’s new house. Athal went to be royal and had Fian and his sister escorted from the palace.
It is clear that Koll Konandé wants to stop Athal from freeing Solay. He has sent at least three important agents to prevent it from happening. So we have to make sure it does. Mom and Dad will be off to Turenay. They can’t stay for the birth. And that’s quite understandable. I wish I could go too, but the way things are I’d only fret anyway. Better to be here. Besides, this way they can keep an eye on Cora and Moryn.
To find a way to deal with this international mess, we invited Koll Neveshtan and Prince Atima. I’m not sure what we will achieve by that, but I hope to find out at least how much Koll Neveshtan supports his relative in resisting the alliance. It seems the Mighty Servant here in Valdis is in the pocket of Koll Neveshtan and they are trying to gain control of the trade here. That must be prevented. It would be bad for all of us. They are making things difficult for the Dawn first. Probably trying to establish dominance under the Nameless before taking on the rest. We might even have to try and help the Dawn fight them off. Another problem to think on, perhaps we should invite a representative as well.
Right now I regret that I never got around to learning to play chess. It feels like I am, only with bigger stakes and less information. I’m going to write a letter to Hallei Lyan, I think he might be the type and I want to see if I can’t get to know him a little better. I have never felt so completely dependant on the goodwill and ability of others, now that we are trying to make Valdyas safe and well. Speaking of that, I am looking forward to Talvi and Parandé coming to become major domo and master of etiquette here and bring this place, and probably me, up to standard a bit.
